4 Major Reasons Why Digital Note-Taking Is Leading To Better Work Environment in Schools [2022]

Over the years, especially after the transition to Online Learning after the outbreak of the Corona Virus, digital tools including but not limited to google docs, notion, etc. have empowered online note-taking. For a long history, it has been believed that hand written-notes prove to be more efficient in the long retention of details and content learned in school. However, this notion has been disregarding a significant fact that this kind of long retention is not necessarily needed in modern times when accessibility to all sorts of data is easy with Google for example. With just a couple of clicks, all the information could be retrieved. Moreover, digital note-taking has added benefits that lead to a better work environment in schools.

Without wasting any time further let’s get into it:

Added Time

Quote By Leo-Tolstoy applies to digital note-taking

Time, Time, Time! Time is one of the most valuable assets a person can possess. It is something that can’t be bought using money, but rather could only be saved with wise decisions. It goes hand in hand in with what Leo Tolstoy once said: “The two most powerful warriors are patience and time”. He is indeed right! There are two studies that parallelly support the idea that taking online notes is a time saver.

The first one shows that on average a person writes physically at a speed of 14 words per minute, in contrast to 40 words per minute when an average person is typing. When writing small excerpts or short notes, these stats do not make a huge difference. However, when writing long essays, these stats do make a difference.

Let’s take an example:

An English class is given a task to finish an 800 words essay during the course of a period in school, and one person decides to do it by hand, and one person decides to do it online. The person doing it by hand will take roughly 57 minutes to finish the essay, while the person doing it digitally would take 20 minutes to finish the same essay. This is a difference of 37 minutes (more than half an hour). By doing the work digitally, students can finish a given assignment fast, more so, teachers and students can get additional time to start another lesson or review concepts.

40 words per minute Stat//digital-note-taking//

The second study done by studyskills.com shows that a typical student spends only 60% of the class time taking notes when they are taking notes through a digital medium. This study proves a very similar point which the first one did. It accomplishes the idea of digital writing acting as a time saver for students for working on other important tasks.

Increased Accessibility

Online note-taking or writing on platforms such as google docs, notion, Evernote, google slides, etc. makes it easy for students to access this information from wherever they want. All they require is a device and an internet connection. At times even an internet connection is not required as work could be saved or downloaded for offline use. This is a very cliche excuse heard by teachers from students: “I did the work but I forgot it at home” or “My dog ate that paper” or even “My notebook got lost/stolen/wet”. When students take notes and write their work on digital platforms, these excuses vanish away as there is no dog online to ruin that work for example.

In other words, taking notes on online platforms ensures consistency and avoidance of unnecessary troubles that a student has to go through while taking handwritten notes. For example, not having the pen/pencil to take notes or if they had a pencil, not having the paper or notebook to take their notes. All these problems simply fade away!

Not to forget, a lot of times students have to worry about carrying a number of notebooks to study for example at their grandma’s house or at a hotel during their vacation. With taking digital notes, students do not have to carry all these physical and heavy notebooks, and can simply access notes from as many classes as they desire.

So all points taken into consideration, having digital notes makes learning more accessible. Moreover, students can focus on studying more than worrying about forgetting their notes or not having them at the time they need them the most.

Higher Level of Clarity

Each note-taking platform has different features and it is a difficult task to cover all those platforms in this one article. Therefore, to understand the benefit of a Higher level of Clarity by taking digital notes we will use the example of google docs.

Students could use multiple features that come with google docs. These features allow students to creatively design their posts and make conceptual understanding more prominent. For example, highlighting might be utilized to make the most significant topics stand out and simple to recognize, which is not always achievable when taking handwritten notes without real highlighters. Similarly, features like Bold, Underline and Italics could be used as well to highlight certain areas and make the notes more comprehendible. More so, google docs has an excellent feature of voice typing, and even without typing, a student could simply speak, and each and every word would be typed for them by the platform. So all and all, using digital platforms to take notes could make work more clear, creative, and easier to comprehend.

Additionally, each student has different handwriting. Oftentimes, it becomes difficult for teachers to comprehend notes and written work. By taking notes digitally, the problem of bad handwriting also fades away, as spacing and fonts make it easier for everyone to grasp the writing.

Consistent Good Hand-writing is a result of digital-note-taking

Collaborative Learning

It is not merely an assumption, but rather a fact that collaborative learning is one of the best ways to learn, grow, and develop together for students. Not just students for that matter, even for adults, collaborative learning is a productive way of growing.

Let us again take the example of google docs. Google docs allow people to create a doc and share it with their friends, assigned groups, and classmates. Writing on the same paper is practically difficult for multiple students when working at the same time. Sharing of digital notes allows for students to work together on projects without any major limitations. They can help each other, make edits, and improve together. Digital note-taking abilities through platforms such as google docs enable teachers to create fun projects for groups of students to partake.

Collaborative Learning

Therefore, online/digital note-taking and writing allow for a collaborative environment to thrive in schools. This ultimately results in students better performing and enjoying their classes.

Conclusion

Here are 4 major reasons why digital note-taking is leading to better work environments in schools:

  • Added Time
  • Increased Accessibility
  • Higher Level Of Clarity
  • Collaborative Learning

Most Effective Note-Taking Strategies

Here are some most prominent note-taking strategies.

 Cornell Method

Note of strategy, The Cornell Method has been and continues to be one of the most key techniques among students today. You simply divide your notes into three sections. The right-hand column is the home of the general area. This is where you keep one’s most important ideas covered by the teacher during the class. It is vital to be able to summarize se as much as possible and be smart when taking notes (see #4). The left area serves as a tribute to the general area. Creating notes in the margins allows us to understand and relate almost every part of our notes.

This section may develop during or at the end of the lesson itself. The last section labeled ‘summary’ should be left blank throughout the class. It is intended to be used when reviewing/study lecture notes. This reduces the need to keep up with the professor’s delivery and to write quickly. In this segment, you must try to develop a shortlist of the major points to further reflect on the lecture notes.

Split Page Method

This form of Note Taking method has similarities with Cornell Method, but it is still a concept in itself. The plan is to divide the page into two pieces vertically. There is a main concept and a secondary idea.

The idea is that while you’re taking notes, you’re organizing everything at the same time. This technique may require some alteration at first, but it will help you improve your study time in the long run when you are using our notes.

Visual Aids

This method relies on the use of visual aids to improve the way the mind operates. It involves the use of pictures, charts, diagrams, etc. Instead of writing long paragraphs of information, our brain follows the information sequentially. The use of shades as well as other visual elements, like different sizes of letters, as well known as super documents, favors the user. Just because of that, Mind Maps has become one of the most widespread and efficient techniques of taking notes.

Symbols and Abbreviations

No matter which technique you use to take notes, there’ll be times when you can’t keep up with the lessons, and your wrist may begin to hurt you by writing. Thus it is important to develop your own signifier language so that you can write too much with little effort. When the class comes to an end, you can always “translate” the notes you took and during class. This is going to leave you in your own ‘dialect’ of notes.

Underline Key Points

It is advisable to emphasize the most effective learning principles of the lesson because they will stand out more clearly & you’ll be many inclined to memorize them. In addition, the notes will be less repetitive and you can evaluate them more rapidly because you can use the underscore parts as a guide and users won’t need to read the full text every time you research.

How To Write a Good Essay?

Many wonder where to start and how to organize ideas on paper. But, as difficult as it may seem, writing good texts can be very simple. For this, it is necessary to follow the appropriate structure, know the grammatical rules well, and most importantly, read and be well informed about the main subjects that permeate the newspapers. This will undoubtedly make all the difference when it comes to writing.

Types of writing

To know how to write a good essay, it is essential to remember the main types of texts (extensive guide). They are:

– Narration: it is a story or story presented in sequence;

– Description: it is the detailed detailing of people, places, objects, or events;

– Dissertation: it is the exposure and defense of a point of view through arguments.

If you are asking yourself, “but, where to start?” Stay tuned for the next tip!

Theme

The first tip on how to write a good essay is to pay close attention to the topic. Yes, it is the “heart” of the text and can appear only as a word, but also through a sentence. So read on and think about it. Then ask the following questions about the topic:

– What?

– How?

– When?

– Where?

– Because?

These questions will help develop a line of reasoning on the subject and assist in the text’s planning and organization.

Text production

Based on the answers listed in the previous point, it is already possible to sketch a draft by further developing each of the answers. Try to turn them into paragraphs, going a little deeper into each one in a cohesive and organized way.

Please note that, in general, a maximum of 30 lines is required. Therefore, it is not necessary to write very long paragraphs, which can also make the text tiring. This is also an important tip on how to do good writing.

Structure

Once the draft is over, the time has come to organize everything that has been written. But, you don’t have to despair. To properly format the text, with an order of presentation of ideas, it is essential to follow a structure formed by introduction, development, and conclusion.

Introduction:

The first part of the text is the introduction. Therefore, it must be objective, direct, attractive, and hold the reader’s attention. For this, the theme must be presented in the first sentence to clarify the position on that subject.

It is immediately possible to perceive the theme of the essay and the position of the author when stating that “the advertising media has been running advertisements to children, even if the products or services advertised are not intended for them.

Development

Development is the second part of the essay and the longest. It should contain three or four paragraphs, depending on the number of lines in each paragraph. At that moment, the arguments that will defend the idea exposed in the introduction will be presented.

So, if you are wondering how to do good writing, pay close attention to development. One strategy that can help is to establish a chronology and hierarchy of arguments, to prevent the paragraph from running away from the topic or becoming confused.

Conclusion

The conclusion is the closing part of the essay. It should concisely summarize everything that was covered during the text, in addition to proposing a possible solution to the problem exposed.

Drawing up a draft and knowing the structure are important tips on how to write a good essay. In addition to all this, it is essential to develop the habit of reading, which will help in the development of analytical skills, keep up to date on the main issues of the day, and practice.

Is it better to take handwritten notes than online notes?

Online Vs Handwritten Notes: There are people on both sides with arguments that support the benefits of one method over the other. In this blog we will go over details related to both methods.

In general, early research suggests that taking notes by hand makes it easier for you to know the material than to type the notes on your computer.  An experiment on word recall and recognition demonstrated that participants remember vocabularies better when they start writing them by hand than when they type them on a computer. Because handwritten notes is a lot slower (speeds: click here), all who handwrite their notes are compelled to interpret the information as well as put it in their own words. As such, learners who handwrite notes can better understand the content.

On one hand, digital note-taking is effective; it is faster, cleaner, and more available in the long run. On the other hand, if you addressed “B” more often, you might try handwritten notes whose effects on core strength, direct interaction, & cost can profit the average student. Written work notes improve your overall understanding of the topic and help you recognize it better, as writing down involves higher learning studying than trying to type it. … Typing notes is better if you really need to write a lot, or if you schedule to go over the substance again later.

The common question people are asking is if you should write handwritten notes or type them on a computer.

In short, studies usually show that handwriting notes allow you to remember the material better than typing it. Even so, when it comes to actually selecting which method you should use, the response is more complex than that, because there are situations where trying to type your notes might be easier than putting them by hand.

At the time of recording notes during lectures, the foremost concern with type-writing is that people are more likely to engage in word-writing when type-writing than when hand-writing notes. This means that while using a laptop, people are likely to type whatever the speaker or lecturer thinks, in a way that involves a fairly shallow cognitive processing of information.

In comparison, handwriting usually involves more in-depth processing of the material, since individuals tend to give more recognition to which parts of the material they should write down, rather than simply transcribing everything the person uses the phrase.

Being aware of this issue may actually take better notations while typing, as long as you can effectively summarise and rephrase the material while typing, instead of just transcribe it verbally.

Testing, however, shows that, in most cases, telling children to stop taking item contains when typing does not actually result better in their note-taking abilities.

It doesn’t imply you won’t be able to improve if you’re working actively about how to take notes, especially if you dedicate oneself to it in the long term, but it does mean users should be wary, and seriously ask themselves if taking notes on a computer has been hindering their learning.

Study breaks will increase your feeling of control over one’s timetable and simply enjoy one’s time. After a break, it will be easier to continue trying to work and you’ll be better at staying focused on your exams – this responsibility will pay off in the long run.

How often should you take a break?

One of the biggest mistakes that students make when they take a break from their studies is to allow the break to run excessively long. Having breaks that are 15–20 minutes long is ideal, but try to avoid them lasting forever than that, because you’re more likely to lose the motivation to go back to your studies. Timers may be a useful tool to help prevent you from trying to extend your break.

Move yourself

Sitting at your workstation for hours could be a strain on your body, resulting in stiffness as well as tiredness. Exercise during your study breaks is the ideal way of preventing your body from being tired and sore.

Stretching or taking a quick walk will assist your blood flow and re-energize you in the procedure. Getting out in the fresh air could even help you clear your head & improve your overall well-being.

Fall asleep

Done in quick spurts, power naps offer a wonderful (and relaxing) way to improve your efficiency. You should aim for a 20–30 minute power nap that will help make you more notified, reduce pain, and enhance cognitive function. However, if you nap for too long, you run the risk of sleeping inertia, making you feel dazed & sleepy, so make sure you set your alarm.

sleep academic
,

This is how sleep has a direct impact on academic performance.

Sleep: a cause of low grades?

Without any doubt, Sleep really is a factor that plays role in the academic performance of, especially students. Low grades in children are something that must be addressed. Not only for the academic aspect but for the well-being of the children. The first thing that must be known is the cause to be able to put solutions.

Sleep plays a fundamental role in child development, it is proven that lack of sleep causes slight changes in mood, pessimistic attitude, stress, and anxiety, which reduces learning capacity and can cause sleep disorders.

Building habits from an early age!

Before moving ahead, I highly recommend reading this article on the importance of building habits from an early age!

It is necessary to sleep properly from an early age. This will prevent adolescents from being reached and have tired, apathetic young people, without wanting to do anything, without motivation. Let’s say that there is a chronic lack of sleep that has to be avoided with established guidelines from childhood. The decrease in sleep time is a very general problem, not only in children and young people but also in adults.

It seems as if sleep is what we can lose when we lack time for other things, and that is what usually happens in today’s society, that we lack time for many things, and we subtract from sleep. Many students give up rest to get high-grades, but analysis shows that students who sleep more get better grades. Decreased total sleeping hours have been linked with fading academic performance.

What do the studies show?

Several studies have determined that many children and adolescents do not get enough sleep. The origin of this deficit may be due to overloaded schedules or other causes such as watching television until late or poor use of mobile phones and other electronic devices at night. Children’s hours are often adjusted to those of adults and not the other way around as it should be. This causes children to go to bed late often and have to get up early because the hours are early.

This generates a sleep deficit, a deficit that is also not recoverable. It is estimated that 27% of children between 5 and 12 years old have trouble going to sleep, it is a percentage to consider.

It has been proven that lack of sleep generates a decrease in the ability to assimilate knowledge by up to 40%. The greater the irregularity of sleep, the worse the grades, the studies in this regard affirm and, therefore, lower performance in verbal, spatial, reasoning, and numerical cognitive skills.

The lack of sleep affects not only school performance but also aggression in the classroom. It has been proven that increasing the time of sleep reduces aggressiveness.

Sleep restores the brain and prepares us for the challenges of the day and social interactions. If the minimum hours of sleep are not met, we become more primitive, we cannot keep our emotions under control.

Conclusion:

Knowing that sleep affects so many important things in student’s development, it is essential that we stop, take a little time and ask ourselves:

  • What time do we go to bed?
  • Do we get enough rest while they sleep?
  • Do we have the right mattress for healthy sleep?
  • We need to become aware of the importance of rest in the school performance of students.

5 Realistic Benefits of Homework

Benefits of Homework: Schools prided themselves on giving lots of homework as if it were synonymous with a good education or high academic achievement. However, today there are many schools that prohibit them or have reduced them considerably. These detractors believe that homework, in primary school, is not only not necessary, but it does not leave time for children to do what is truly important: play and participate in activities that develop their creativity.

Whether you are for or against your children having many duties, what is clear is that incorporating them into the daily routine helps them develop a balanced life. Despite having clearly differentiated views as to whether or not children of this age should have homework, there is something that most teachers, parents, and educators agree on, and that is that doing them regularly has benefits. Here we tell you what they are:

1) Responsibility

Completing a task encourages them to be responsible and to work independently. Incorporating tasks, and in this case, homework, into their daily routine teaches them how to organize themselves better, how to manage time, learn to make decisions, and solve problems. It also helps them develop good habits that will accompany them throughout their lives, both in studies and in professional life.

Depending on their age, amount of homework, and after-school activities, help them plan their afternoons well. Some experts recommend that children have at least half an hour to have a snack and relax before doing their homework upon arrival from school or their music class.

Others suggest that they do it as soon as they get home from school and then enjoy their free time even more. You will discover the ideal moment together with your children. The important thing is to know them well and know at what time of the day they are most receptive to assimilating and carrying out their tasks.

2) Discipline

Even if the child doesn’t have homework or tests to prepare for, it is important not to miss out on the routine. If the allotted time for homework is one hour a day, even though they don’t have to turn in anything, encourage them to use that time to read, review, cook, or do homework science experiments and help with something around the house.

3) Support

While they are studying or doing homework, it is important not to distract or interrupt them and especially to reduce the volume of noise at home. You have to let them know that you are there in case they have any questions or find it difficult to understand what to do. But while it is advisable to monitor your children’s homework, remember that doing it is their responsibility. The more you get involved in their education and their day-to-day, the more interest they will show.

4) Enhances self-esteem.

Once kids gain the self-confidence to perform a task or perform a skill individually, they build strong self-esteem, which is essential to many phases of everyday life.

5) Professional careers.

While most professions don’t ask workers to take tasks home, there are certain deadlines in the actual world. Home tasks can help kids prepare for the real world by showing them to meet their time obligations.
