What is the difference between splitter and switch for HDMI cables?

splitter and HDMI switch

If you’ve ever needed to work with multiple devices connected to the same TV, you’ve probably wondered what the difference is between a splitter and HDMI switch. The accessories may be physically similar, but the results are completely different.

So that there is no longer any doubt about the characteristics of each of them, in this article, we will explain how to choose the correct model to suit your needs. Otherwise, you might end up with an accessory in your hands that won’t be able to solve your problem.

 What is a splitter?

If we translate the word “splitter” into Portuguese, we will arrive at the term “divisor” and that is precisely its function. A splitter allows you to take the video signal from one source and display it on more than one display. It all depends on how many outputs the splitter has, but this number is variable.

So, suppose your original audio and video source is a PlayStation 4 or an overhead projector. What you want to do is display this image simultaneously on more than one monitor. It could be two, four, eight, it doesn’t matter. The splitter has a set number of outputs – and each output means a new compatible display.

What is a switch?

In terms of sign, what the switch does is the opposite of the splitter. That is, it allows you to connect two audio and video sources to the same display. To understand its logic, let’s take an example.

Imagine a TV that has only one HDMI input. If you try to connect a PlayStation 4 and an Xbox One to it, for example, you’ll have to switch back and forth, as there’s no physical space to connect the two. The switch solves this problem. You can connect both consoles to the accessory and the switch to the TV. Just change a switch to switch between signals from one source and another.

Why is there so much confusion between splitter and switch?

Both accessories look very similar and have similar functions. Some brands, for example, have exactly the same models in terms of design, although the purposes are different. Add to that the fact that many people buy an accessory “to turn on a lot of things on the TV.” As the descriptions are similar, switchers and splitters end up in shopping carts without the consumer knowing for sure if it is exactly what he needs.

You can find splitter models with two and four outputs. This is the case of the models WI357 from Multilaser (2 outputs) and WI329 from Multilaser (4 outputs). Both have similar pricing and functionality, but what changes is that the second model has more outputs – so it allows you to link content from one source on up to four displays.

When it comes to HDMI switches, you can find the models WI290 from Multilaser (3 inputs) and WI346 from Multilaser (5 inputs). In the first case, it is possible to connect up to three devices to the HDMI input of a TV and, in the second, up to five. The first model is more affordable, but in terms of functionality, they are similar.

So now that you know what the differences are, stay tuned and choose the right model to meet your office needs. However, just in case, it is recommended to have one of each in your company. After all, you never know when you’re going to need them.
